Watercolor portrait of Prince

Prince watercolor portrait

This is my Prince watercolor portrait. I, like many other people, became a fan of Prince in the early 80’s. My wife and I saw him in Charlotte, NC in November of 2000, and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I remember that about 30 minutes before the show was supposed to start, the lights dimmed and music started to play. It was clearly Prince music, but none that I had ever heard before. It wasn’t a specific group of songs, but a “warm-up” mix. That turned out to be the best dance music I have ever heard in my life.

I used my standard technique to create the Prince watercolor portrait. After sketching the main shapes, I painted the middle tones. Then I painted the darkest tones, using  dark blue and purple (of course). When those colors dried, I went back to add the red and orange. I would have left the background white, but I felt that it would help to define the front edge of his face. I was shocked and saddened when I learned of his passing. Rest in peace.
